Toilets and faucets are notorious for water waste. It's literally a matter of flushing resources down the toilet. Gallons worth of perfectly fine water, even drinkable water (definitely potable water) is expended pretty much every time you flush. People don't realize this, and that's why some folks are taking control of the situation a bit by installing these automatic flush valves for toilets . A lot of these valves are able to measure the flush, taper the flush a bit, so that a "full flush" doesn't actually deject from the tank. Automatic faucets do the same thing. They taper the output on the pouring of the water, as oppose to keeping the faucet on while the person's at the sink the whole time. And it's just convenient. You don't have to turn on the faucet or actually flush the toilet, you can just stand in front of the toilet and sink, and as soon as you're done, it shuts off.
