The condition known as macular degeneration is one in which the functionality of the macula, the portion of retina associated with detail vision, is compromised. The manner in which the retinal damage occurs depends on whether the condition is dry or wet. In dry macular degeneration, the damage is caused by the accumulation of drusen (deposits composed of extracellular material). In wet macular degeneration, the macular degeneration treatments damage is caused by the development of abnormal blood vessels that are sufficiently weak to leak blood and fluids. There is no surgical option that can cure the condition. There are, however, surgical options available (either commercially or in trial phases) that can help to slow the progression of the disease or limit the damage. An overview of the surgeries follows.
